Hello all,

We\'ve recently had an outside socket installed which is working fine with no probelms. It is IP53 rated and is RCD Protected at the FuseBox. However I checked out the wiring and noticed the Electrician had wired it off the Lighting Circuit and the socket is rated as 10amps. My question is;

Can you wire a socket off a lighting circuit...?

I\'ve since looked at our HRV installation and noticed they have done the same thing except its an extension lead directly wired to the ligthing rose and the HRV fan plugged into it.

Yes but sub optimal. if the lighting circuit is wired in 1mm and protected at 10 amps (to protect the cable) your power point may trip the breaker if the circuit loading exceeds 10 amps for to long.
if the lighting circuit is wired in 1.5mm then the likely outcome is a bit better if the circuit is protected by a 16 amp circuit breaker.

Assuming that the original wiring was installed before the consideration of Bulk Thermal Insulation was a required element of design, although the installer of the power point would have been required to consider the efects of BTI.

I presume if its a 16amp circuit it shouldnt be a 10amp socket...?

Mmm not sure what to make of that response...

Not saying it is a 16amp circuit just a presumption thats its not with it being a 10a socket

The circuit breaker protects the cable, not the socket.
A 10A socket could be fed from almost any breaker size provided the cable being protected can fit into the terminals at the back and can safely carry the rated current of the breaker. You need to look at the circuit protection to find the protection rating, not the final fittings. You can then look at the cable to work out whether the protection is appropriate.
