When I did my pre-trade we each received a copy of 'Electrical Principles For The Electrical Trades'. You won't get one if you go with ETCO, I was with SIT. It's a great book that complements the unit standards you will work through to get your qualification. It explains far more than the standards do and in more detail. You might find a pdf version somewhere but be aware the copy I have is over 450 pages.

" It explains far more than the standards do and in more detail."

Of course it does. Standards are NOT text books, explaining how things work.
They're books of rules, setting minimum requirements to be complied with. The electrical installation Standards do offer some advice as well, but telling us how to do our job is NOT their purpose.

My text book was, and i still have it in pristine condition, 'Electrical Theory and Practice' published in 1977 by the NZ Technical Correspondence Institute.

and while it's not the current book, which i also have, you wont get better descriptions of the theory than the old one.

Current one is as said above by others.

'Electrical Theory and Practice' Got a copy of that on my bookshelf too Brian, a later version is Electrotechnology Principals and Practice and was published in 2000 by The Open Polytechnic, that's a tad more up to date
